Live Today As If It Were Your Last

How would you live today if you knew it were your last? Would you live it any differently? Would you live it to the full? Would you squeeze everything you could out of every precious moment? Would you spend it focusing on the positive instead of the negative? In other words, would you stop sweating the small stuff? Yeah, I think most of us would when faced with the certainty that our time here was up. The thing is, and not to upset anyone, but today could be our last! There is no way of knowing when our time here will be up. So why can’t we seem to remember that and choose to live each day as if it were the last one we would ever have? What a difference such a mindset would make for us and all those on our path!

♦ Go for it now. The future is promised to no one. ~Wayne Dyer♦ Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today. ~James Dean♦ Every man dies. Not every man really lives. ~Braveheart

♦As you grow older, you’ll find the only things you regret are the things you didn’t do. ~Zachary Scott♦ And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years. ~Abraham Lincoln♦ I’m less interested in why we’re here. I’m wholly devoted to while we’re here. ~Erika Harris

I was reflecting on this question recently. From that reflection I wrote a poem that I’d like to share with you today.

I WILL LIVE TODAYI will live today as if it were my last And let go of grudges from the past I’ll spend more time with family and friends Sharing my love and making amends I’ll be quicker to offer a hug and a smile I’ll slow down and savor each moment awhile I’ll give thanks for each gift that comes from above Especially the gift of God’s unfailing Love. Each moment I’ll cherish as I live in the ‘Now’… Each second full of all the love my heart will allow One thing is certain — life sure goes by fast And there’s no way to know which day is my last So I won’t waste one second of precious time here Being held captive to doubt and/or fear I’ll express gratitude for the day that begins anew Seizing the chance to make a difference in all I do.At day’s end as I bow my head to pray I’ll give gratitude for the gift of another day I’ll pray for a heart that overflows with His Love And that I may walk in the Presence of the Beloved Then, I’ll go forth as His instrument of Love and Light Allowing the God-Light within to shine … oh, so bright! Tomorrow is but a dream and yesterday is now past I have only this moment to live, so I’ll live it as if it were my last!

I suppose it is wishful thinking to believe that I – the weak creature I am, could possibly live each new day in the way this poem expresses. Yet, I think it is something to strive for. A goal. An ideal. It isn’t something I think I can do on my own, but I do think with God’s help anything is possible. So I’m making it a new part of my daily morning prayers. Usually before my feet ever hit the floor in the morning, the first thoughts I have are those of gratitude for a new day. If you are a regular visitor to my Facebook fan page you read those words on every morning prayer I post:

“Good Morning Heavenly Father! I Love You! Thank You for this day”

But now I am adding something new to the mix. “Lord, help me to live today as if it were my last.”

So, tomorrow morning as you open your sleepy eyes, and before you rise from your bed will you join me?

In Christ’s Love,

Belinda Rose
