Satan’s Battlefield Is Your Mind
Updated: Oct 21, 2021
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2
Are you listening to Satan’s lies? You know, those all too familiar ‘whispers of destruction’ that speak self-defeating thoughts like, you’ll never be good enough, you’ll always be alone, you’re such a failure, you’re worthless, and that big one for so many of us, you’re unlovable. After all, Satan is called the Father of Lies for a reason, he’s a master of this dark art. He knows you so well that the lie being whispered in your ear is personalized. That’s right, it’s one he’s made up especially for you, and he’s using it to dig his nasty, pointed finger deep into the wounds that hurt you most.
Your eyes saw me unformed, yet in Your book all my days were written, before any of them came into being. Psalm 139:16
I think over the years the enemy has used all of those lies mentioned above, and many more on me. But the one that has done the most damage is the lie that says I’m unlovable. That one seems to have been with me for as long as I can recall. I grew up believing it to my core, and every negative experience I had — the abuse, the bullies, the rape — all just seemed to be reinforcements of the lie. The thing about these lies we are told over and over, is that they feel so much like our own thoughts. Once we have the thought, if we fail to rebuke it, then it goes to work stirring up our emotions, and once our emotions take over all bets are off. Now we find ourselves embroiled in emotional turmoil and reacting, or more than likely overreacting to a thought that was in truth a lie Satan whispered. How many of us have acted out that negative thought with some very dark and negative actions towards ourselves or another. Our wounds — those places deep in our soul that carry pain from past hurts are Satan’s prime target, and sadly these lies repeated over time seem to become entrenched as part of our emotional DNA. You’ll know this is the case when logically you understand the lie isn’t true but you struggle to overcome because it feels true. Every time Satan whispers the lie you feel like someone has just stabbed you in the heart or punched you in the gut. It is then, when these lies begin to literally feel like our truth the enemy has a stronghold in some area of your life. To beat the enemy back reclaiming the lost territory in our mind we will have to battle both diligently and mightily.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God … Ephesians 6:17
At the end of my memoir, Little Girl Crying, I mentioned that I still suffer from wounds so deep that I’m not sure if my spirit will ever be unbound. The deepest wound is the one that says I’m unloved and unlovable. It was this lie that clearly was a large and dynamic part of my nearly 40-year battle with anorexia nervosa and depression. Yep, that one single lie very nearly killed me. I simply didn’t understand as a child, young girl or even a young woman that the mind is Satan’s primary battlefield, and where he wages a vicious and unrelenting war on us daily. But I’m older and wiser now, and thanks to the Holy Spirit, I’ve grown in my walk with the Lord. Praise God! I know my true identity in Christ. Even though I still falter and fall, I know who my enemy is and I’m much wiser to his ways. But most importantly, I know my sword is mighty and one Satan can’t/won’t defeat — the Holy Word, and God’s promises in particular. Praise God! But to defeat the enemy with Scripture we have to know it so that when the lies come we can rebuke them and stand firm in God’s truth.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesian 6:10-13
Another very powerful tactic to fight the lies the enemy tells us is to take that particular scripture verse that you are claiming into meditation. Sit in God’s presence and ponder it. Ask for help from the Holy Spirit in the renewing of your mind. Let the light of the scripture verse — which is God’s truth about you — permeate your thoughts. In other words, own it! Memorize the verses that are a part your personal battle plan and be prepared when the enemy comes with his whispers of destruction. To help memorize these verses try writing them down on index cards, sticky notes for the fridge, the bathroom mirror, your car and keep a copy in your pocket or purse. If you enjoy creative things consider prayer or Bible journaling where you can not only write the verse in BIG, bold letters, but you can color and doodle around them on the page. Hold tight to, have faith in, and stand strong on God’s Promises.
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3So the LORD answers, “Can a woman forget her own baby and not love the child she bore? Even if a mother should forget her child, I will never forget you.” Isaiah 49:15
Before we end this post with prayer, I want to share something very special that has helped me immensely in my own battle against the lie that ‘I’m unlovable’. It is an incredible video that I’ve no doubt was inspired by the Holy Spirit. Perhaps your familiar with it as it has recently marked its 2oth anniversary! It’s titled “Father’s Love Letter”. This video has helped me in ways I can’t begin to say. Share it with someone you know that is struggling against Satan’s lies. Bookmark it and keep it close to remind yourself that you’re never alone, so perfect, so cherished by our Heavenly Father — loved more than you could ever begin to imagine.
Heavenly Father,We thank you and give you glory and praise for being a Father of such love, forgiveness, kindness and mercy. We thank you for Your Holy Word that is our Truth and our unfailing sword against Satan and his lies. We pray for the power of the Holy Spirit to come upon us and guide us in the renewing of our minds. Cast out the enemies lies in our mind we pray, and let only your truth abide there. Help us to at last see ourselves as you see us. You know our every wound — those hurts of our past that Satan uses in an attempt to destroy us and keep us from living out the plans you have for us — heal them with your soothing balm of love we pray. We stand Father on your Word and your promises. We hold tight to Your Truth. We thank You, love You and praise You always and in everything, now and forevermore! In Jesus NameAmen
Until next time …
In Christ’s love,
