Surrender: The First Step to Serenity
Lord, Why is surrendering so hard to do When all it means is falling into You? From “Surrender” a poem by Belinda Rose
We admitted we were powerless to overcome our weaknesses – that our lives had become unmanageable. – The First Step, Alcoholics Anonymous
Imagine we are gathered together in a small meeting room. We watch as a young bearded man with long dark hair scribbles across the right side of the chalk board the words: The First Step to Serenity: Surrender. What Will You Surrender Today? To the left of the chalk board is a short prayer that we readily recognize, The Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
The young man turns to walk to the speaker’s podium. As he looks out at the group we are taken aback by his striking blue eyes that seem to radiate light! There’s ‘something’ about this man. His gentle mannerisms somehow command our attention. There’s a beautiful presence about him, and so, intently we listen to what he is about to say. “Good evening. Thank you for coming tonight. My name is Jesus.” our speaker begins. “You have come here tonight to begin the journey to healing: mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. You have come because as difficult as it might be for you to admit, you are not in control of your life. There is something – some area of your life that brings you here – that you feel powerless over. You have come here because you want your spirit to be freed. You may want to live unbound from your past and your memories, your addictions, your compulsions, your sinful habits, your weaknesses, or something else in life that is keeping you bound and shackled. No longer able to cope with the endless pain, unyielding heartache, inconsolable grief, or the utter chaos these things have created in your life, you come seeking healing and the serenity that such healing can bring to body, mind and spirit. And I tell you, the first step you must take to know that healing and serenity in your life is that of surrender to the Heavenly Father. It isn’t easy to surrender. It takes great humility to admit you are powerless over your life … over your weaknesses. But in doing so, the Heavenly Father will meet you where you are, giving you the courage and strength to overcome so the healing may begin. Now, who among you would like to come forward and begin by answering these two questions. What in your life are you powerless over? What do you need to surrender today?”
Like a classroom of frightened school children that don’t have the answer to the teacher’s question, we look at one another searching for one who’ll be brave enough to go first. Jesus, sensing our timidity, intervenes. “Don’t be afraid. We will begin on the left side of the room until each of you have had an opportunity to speak.” His gaze falls softly on me, who just happens to be the first one on the left side of the room. “We will begin with you, Belinda.”
Rising from my seat and walking to the podium, Jesus smiles a warm and welcoming smile melting away my fear and hesitation. I step up to the microphone. “Hello. I am here today because I am powerless over the emotions and feelings created by an old wound caused from past trauma,” I tearfully begin. Today, I’d like to surrender that wound and the trauma that created it to the only one I know and believe can heal it, my Heavenly Father the Divine Healer. On my own, I am powerless to fix this or make it better. I cannot, but God can. I believe in a God of miracles. I believe in a God of amazing grace.” As I move away from the microphone Jesus embraces me. Wrapped in his arms I feel not only comforted, but a renewed strength and hope that the inner healing and serenity I seek is possible.
“Thank you, Belinda. Let us continue,” Jesus says, as His warm gaze now falls upon you. Now it is your turn to stand before Him and take the podium. What in your life are you powerless over today? What will you surrender? As you step up to the podium and courageously take the mic you begin to speak … Heavenly Father … help me today to surrender …
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, Help me to surrender my life to You, especially those areas of my life in which I am powerless. As I rest them at Your feet, grant me the strength and courage to let go, leave all I surrender there, and let You take over. Grant me the serenity to accept those things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. I pray that I may find the inner peace I seek, and know the loving comfort of Your presence with me. In Jesus Name, Amen.
May you find the courage to surrender all to the Lord. May you experience the power and peace of His transforming Love. <3 Belinda1
